What to Expect During Your First TRE Session
Embarking on your first Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) session can evoke a mix of anticipation and curiosity. Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE is a series of simple exercises designed to help the body release deeply held tension and stress. If you're considering trying TRE for the first time, here's what you can expect during your initial session.
Preparation- what do you need to bring?
Please bring a yoga mat or something similar, as some of the positions will be on the floor.
Have comfortable clothes- you don't need wear a sporty outfit, as our purpose is not to sweat here, but we want you to feel comfortable and move easily.
Introduction and Explanation
We will begin by introducing you to the concept of TRE and explaining how it works. We will discuss the body's natural ability to release tension and how TRE taps into this innate mechanism.
Safety Guidelines
Before diving into the exercises, we will emphasize the importance of safety. TRE activates the body's natural shaking or trembling response, which can sometimes feel intense or unfamiliar. However, this process is entirely natural and safe. We can cover any questions you may have ahead of the session.
You won't be asked to talk about any stressful situations or difficult emotions, so you don't need to worry about sharing in front of the group. Of course if you want to share that will be also welcomed. However, we will simply focus on what the body is doing and how that feels in the moment.
Grounding
We will then do a short grounding exercise. Grounding is a technique used to bring your awareness back to the present moment and connect with the sensations of your body. It's particularly helpful in calming the mind, reducing anxiety, and enhancing your ability to focus. After the grounding exercise, you'll likely feel more calm and prepared to engage in the TRE exercises.
During the grounding exercise, we'll focus on sensations such as the feeling of your feet on the ground, the rhythm of your breath, and the weight of your body in the chair or on the floor. By directing our attention to these physical sensations, we anchor ourselves in the present moment and create a sense of stability and safety.
Remember that grounding is a valuable tool that you can use anytime, anywhere, to bring yourself back to the present moment and cultivate a greater sense of calm and clarity in your life.
Step-by-Step Instructions
I will guide you through each step of the TRE process. I'll demonstrate the exercises and provide clear instructions on how to perform them safely and effectively. There are 7 simple exercises we will go through. These are not intense exercises, this won't be like a gym class, we will simply activate certain muscle groups in order to help activating the body's natural shaking response. During the session, You'll learn how to manage this shaking response and allow it to unfold naturally.
Integration
After completing the exercises, you'll have an opportunity to integrate your experience. I will also remind you to drink plenty of water and take care of yourself in the hours following the session.
As you leave your first TRE session, take some time to reflect on your experience. Notice any shifts or changes in your body, mind, or emotions, sleep. Remember that TRE is a process, and each session may bring new insights and discoveries.
Throughout the session, I aim to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can feel safe to explore your own experiences. I will offer guidance and support as needed, helping you navigate any challenges that may arise. As you engage in TRE, you'll be encouraged to tune into your body's sensations and become aware of any feelings or emotions that arise. We will emphasize the importance of staying present and allowing the process to unfold without judgment.
